Who We Are

We answer gardening questions, offer workshops, and educate Fluvanna county residents through community outreach in the following areas:

• Maintain a weekly Horticulture Help Desk at the Fluvanna Public Library and many county events
• Support growing and sustaining food at the Community Garden
• Safeguard wildlife with pollinator friendly habitats and plants
• Educate young people through school, library and 4H programs
• Provide scholarships for 4H camp and secondary education in the field of horticultural
• Propagate and offer affordable plants, including natives, at our annual plant sale fund raiser
• Provide speakers for various gardening programs of interest to community organizations
• Participate at the County Fair focusing on garden and nature activities for kids

Horticultural enthusiasts, who are interested in learning more about gardening and in volunteering in their community, are welcome to attend an in depth training program offered through VCE at a low cost.  Upon completion of 50 hours of classroom training and a 50 hour internship of volunteer service on approved projects, participants become certified Extension Master Gardeners. Eight additional hours of continued education are required each year to stay up to date on current issues and recommendations for homeowners.

Once trained, EMG’s are required to volunteer for a minimum of 20 hours each year in a variety of ways to provide information and free or low cost programs to the public. All activities are focused on encouraging and promoting environmentally sound horticultural practices through sustainable landscape management, education, and training.
