Senior Garden

In Completion of the Master Gardening Course in 1998, the Fluvanna Master Gardeners decided to provide a garden facility to the senior residents of Fluvanna.   The Fork Union Parks and Recreation approved the concept and suggested the garden be constructed behind the Parks and Recreation Center.

A Raised Bed Concept was chosen.  They produce more per square feet than ordinary beds.  They bring more order and pleasing geometry to the garden.  And, they extend the garden season.

The raised beds would be filled with easily worked soil.  Would eliminated walking on and compacting the soil, and reduce bending over and the stress on joints and muscles.

The Raised beds could be planted with herbs and vegetables or be planted exclusively with colorful flowers and shrubs.  Optional terraces could be built for flowers that beg to be planted with extravagant blooms and cascading colors.

Master Gardeners provide a short lecture and hands on activities at different times.   Some topics for the seniors are, growing herbs, vegetables, cut flowers, specialty plants, and the fabrication of raised troughs, bird feeders, bird houses and topics suggested by the seniors.

A display rack was built to provide visual storage for the available publications from Virginia Tech, monthly hints, and other publications.
